      雲巖曇晟禪師，是藥山禪師的弟子，是洞山良价禪師的老師。

    有一次，雲巖禪師對眾人說：「任何人向我提出問題，我都能回答。」

    洞山禪師就問：「你住的書房裡有多少典籍藏書？」

    雲巖禪師回答：「一個字也沒有。」

    洞山良价再問：「既然是一個字都沒有，你為何如此多聞，什麼問題都能回答呢？」

    雲巖禪師說：「我日夜都不睡覺。」

    洞山良价問說：「我可以向你請教一個問題嗎？」

    雲巖禪師回答：「我的回答就是不回答；你可以問我，但我是不會回答的。」

    洞山良价聽了以後，很懷疑地說：「既是沒有不能回答的問題，為什麼又不回答呢？」

    雲巖禪師說：「因為不回答才是真正的回答。」(圖/李蕭錕)



    禪門的疑問，是心智的開花；老師的答案，是神祕的果實。神祕，就是不說破，不說破才是禪者用力之處。所以禪是離開語言文字的，他有時候以一個動作讓你去體會，有時候舉眉瞬目讓你契入。所謂「家藏萬卷書」，這是我們迷惑時的紙上知識；「日夜不睡覺」，那才是悟時的主人翁。不睡覺的真如佛性，時時刻刻都在清醒中，一切事情都明明白白，還要回答些什麼呢？

    所以禪你問他，他不給你回答，不是他不知道，而是不回答就是最好的回答。有的時候回答，反而讓人誤解，把問題又叉開了。所以禪有時候一默一聲雷，一個沉默，一個不回答，那就是最好的答案，就是告訴你最多的了。
